Michaela’s Story

God definitely works in mysterious ways. I have learned and experienced this time and time again, yet I still find myself falling more in love with God whenever I have the privilege to witness His miracles. I find myself completely in awe of how He works in my life and the lives of people around me.

This summer, I am the videographer at Youthfront Camp West. My love for multimedia production and videography actually began in middle school. I would read the afternoon announcements in front of the school and get to see a behind-the-scenes look at how the technology worked. I was a part of the broadcast team at Mill Valley High School all four years I attended and knew I wanted to continue pursuing multimedia studies in the future. Now, I will be a junior next semester at Drury University where I am earning my degree in Advertising and Public Relations and minors in Business Administration and Web Communication and Design.

I cannot even begin to count the evidences of God’s grace I have experienced so far during my Youthfront journey. I never camped here as a kid, teen-staffed, or worked on Summer Staff before this summer, so it was a truly new experience coming to work here. I wasn’t at all sure what to expect.

The first evidence of grace I witnessed was just being hired at Youthfront in the first place. I was applying for internships and honestly, I hadn’t even heard of the videographer position. My best friend recommended me for the job, so I applied, and was hired. This has been the best job I have ever had, and without God’s perfect timing, I never would have been able to become a member of the Youthfront family.

One of the biggest evidences of grace during my time has been the people I have met. I have only known most of these people for only four weeks, but wow… I love this group of Summer Staff so much. This is a truly special group of people who are on fire for the Lord. It’s incredible that God had a plan for every single person to be here this summer and He has a plan for everyone to play a part in the lives of thousands of middle school kids—that is just amazing. I already cannot imagine having some of them in my life and I know I will remain friends with them for a very long time. One specific moment that stands out occurred a few days ago. I was in my videographer office waiting for the weekly session video to export and upload. It’s a very long, tiring process and I was exhausted from the week. A few of the summer staff came in to keep me company and we just ended up singing, telling jokes, bonding, and laughing so hard we cried. What I thought was going to be a slow, lonely night trying to finish the video ended up being one of my favorite nights of camp. I can’t even count how many times I laughed that night and I am so thankful for the hearts of my coworkers. Godly fellowship is something I strongly believe in, and I can think of nothing more beneficial to my faith journey than being surrounded by people who are passionate about their faith.

God is working in this place. Being the videographer, I am able to see a lot of aspects of camp. I cannot help but smile watching the students raise their hands during a worship song or hold their hands out to receive a blessing. I feel His Presence most when I am able to witness how the students pursue their faith, specifically during the Daily Offices and the gatherings. Some students stay behind and pray because they want a relationship with their Father and feel Him there. Being able to witness God change the lives of students makes the stresses of my job completely worth it. Hearing that kids are coming to Christ at the end of the week fills me with so much joy and knowing that my spiritual family is growing is the best feeling in the world.

I am going to remember this summer forever; there is no doubt about that. I absolutely cannot wait to work here for the rest of the summer and continue to grow in my faith, develop more friendships, and witness God’s incredible work.
